Robbie Waller Allen, Jr., 82 of Virginia Beach passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth.
Robbie was born March 29, 1928 in Bowling Green, the son of the late Robbie W. Allen, Sr. and Alma D. Allen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Diane Williams Allen.
He is survived by two sisters, Alma Marsh of Falmouth, and Ella Doster of Richmond; four daughters Donna Allen Coley and her husband, Michael of King George, Robin Roland and her husband, Bob of Fayetteville, NC, Shelley Leader and her husband, Malcom of Dickinson, TX, and Susan Cohn and her husband, Sheldon of Virginia Beach; two sons, Don and his wife, Cindy of Lothian, MD, and Darrell and his wife, Merritt of Tijeras, NM; five grandchildren, David Roland, Darcy Flynn, Brendan Allen, Rebecca Cohn, and Molly Cohn; and two great-grandchildren, Kia Baron, and Donny Roland.
Robbie served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring in 1966, and the remainder of his career was spent in defense contracting. An ardent advocate of continuing education; his proudest accomplishments were earning his B.S. from the University of Maryland in 1971 and watching all six of his children graduate from college.
Upon retirement, Robbie and Diane loved travelling together, their favorite destinations being Hawaii, Thailand, and Disney World. He spent his last years in Virginia Beach enjoying the ocean front, the symphony, and opera.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel on the grounds of the National Museum of the Marine Corps with the Rev. Jack A. Marcom, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at noon in Quantico National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 9:30 am on Wednesday, July 28 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any institute of education or a symphony orchestra of your choice or to the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, P.O. Box 998, Quantico, VA 22134-0998.
