Melvin Robert Herndon, 91, of Locust Grove, died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Herndon was a WW II Marine Corps veteran. After serving in the military, he worked for Virginia Sales, Beck Chevrolet and Silvey Chevrolet in Fredericksburg where he retired and later worked for Fredericksburg Auto Auction. Melvin was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Merval C. Herndon; his sons, Ronnie Herndon and his wife, Jean, of Spotsylvania County and Geary L. Herndon and his wife, Joanne, of Gold Dale; his daughter, Kathy H. Padgett and her husband, Barry, of Gold Dale; his brother, Talmadge B. Herndon and his wife, Phillis, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; his sister, Ruth H. Hall and her husband, Ray, of Gainsville, FL; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis E. and Mamie W. Herndon; his brothers, Paul R. Herndon and Welford E. Herndon; and his sister, Ida Herndon Johnson.
A funeral service will be held at 10am, Wednesday, July 21 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Jeffrey B. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Salem United Methodist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm, Tuesday, July 20 at the funeral home.
