Flossie Annella Ratcliffe, 94, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Alexandria.

Miss Ratcliffe was born on February 5, 1915 in King George County to the late Benjamin U. and Flossie Harris Ratcliffe.

She graduated from College Height High School, where she was the valedictorian of her class. She earned a B.S. degree from Fredericksburg State Teachers College with a major in commercial education and minors in English and social science. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma National Honorary Society, Modern Portias, and the Town Girls Club.

Miss Ratcliffe taught commercial classes in several Virginia school systems before being admitted to the University of Tennessee where she received her master's degree. She had additional training in her field at New York University. Her last teaching position was at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

After her teaching career, she was employed by the state department in Washington, D.C. in 1947. She spent several years in Vienna, Austria as an instructor of secretarial subjects with the Troop Information and Educational Division of the U.S. Army. When she returned to Washington, she worked for the Agency for International Development until her retirement in 1977.

She was a member of the Episcopal Church and the United States Daughters of 1812.

Survivors include two sisters, Anne R. Webb of Alexandria and Marjorie R. Morse of Fredericksburg; a brother, Raymond C. Ratcliffe, Sr. of Alexandria; and two nephews, Raymond C. Ratcliffe, Jr. of Bowling Green and Cleland P. Ratcliffe of Franklin, Tennessee; and a niece, Anne Morse Stossmeister of Lexington, North Carolina.

A service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 28 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with the Rev. Scott Covington officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
